The Red Bull Rant

The quasi dark side of RBNY fandom.

Jason’s Three Thoughts – RBNY @ Toronto – 2013-04-27

by Jason Iapicco

The NY Red Bulls traveled north of the border to take on Toronto FC in a midday affair. RBNY took a 1- 0 lead into halftime and into the 80th minute when TFC tied it up at 1. Moments later, RBNY added a second goal to seal an away victory 2-1.

Who Said Cahill Can’t Score?

Tim Cahill put away 2 goals, doubling his MLS goal scoring from last year. These two goals puts him at number 4 on the RBNY goal scoring list behind Henry, Espindola, and Olave (3 each).  Hopefully this is the boost Cahill needs to go on a scoring run. For now, as an Everton supporter, it was nice to see Cahill boxing the corner flag again.

Stupid Robles Mistake

Robles is the reason this game ended 2-1. In the 83rd minute, Toronto had a free kick far out, and when the ball was played to the top of the box, and Robles decided he needed to come all the way to the top of the box to punch the ball away. The result? A goal where Jonathan Osorio scored by chipping the ball over almost all of the NY team (see below). Jamison Olave was the only one in a spot to make a stop, but he could not rise enough to stop a ball that grazed the bottom of the crossbar. If not for this stupid move by Robles, the game could have ended 2-0.

What a Difference a Few Games Make

Before the match against DC 3 weeks ago, NY was down in the Eastern Conference cellar, with 1 win and 5 points. Now, after going 3-1-0 in their last four (9 pts), they now sit at #2 in the East (#3 overall), with 14 points. This surge also comes with NY having played the most games in MLS to date (10), and with beating teams in the bottom half of the league (NE, DC, Toronto). They also (for now) sit atop the Goals Scored list with 15 (tied with Dallas).
