New Jersey’s Sky Blue FC had two preseason matches this week, the first of which came against St. John’s University on Saturday. It was the team’s first official pre-season game of 2013, as well as the first victory. Kelley O’Hara started the goal-scoring trend in the 15th minute after putting away a pass from Danesha Adams. In the 28th minute, Kendall Johnson struck a right-footed shot into the lower corner from 18 yards out. A little more than ten minutes later Johnson was fouled in the box and ref called a penalty, Johnson put it away to make it 3-nil. Midfielder Katy Frierson added on two more goals for New Jersey before the final whistle blew to end the game 5-0. Becky Kaplan, Danielle Schulmann, Karen Gurnon, Rachel Breton, and Ashley Baker were all subbed in during the second half and earned valuable minutes against a tough St. John’s squad.
The second match took place at Dilboy Stadium where the Boston Breakers hosted SBFC on Wednesday night. According to the Boston Breakers’ twitter account, which live-tweeted the match, it was a tough game. Sky Blue took home the victory 3-2 but certainly had to fight for it. Once again Kelley O’Hara opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after she chipped a shot over Boston’s goalkeeper. In the 36th minute, Heather O’Reilly was able to fire a shot past Cameron to tie up the game. Sydney Leroux slipped a ball past Cameron in the 62nd minute but was called offsides. Minutes later, Kelley O’Hara headed in a corner from Danesha Adams to make it 2-1. Boston answered quickly as Lianne Sanderson got her foot on Heather O’Reilly’s corner kick and once again tied the game. Four minutes later, Sophie Schmidt beat Boyd from just inside the box and put away a feed from Taylor Lytle. Boston had many goal-scoring opportunities but the defensive work from Brittany Cameron and the back line kept them to only two goals and led NJ to their second pre-season victory.
