The quasi dark side of RBNY fandom.
Today the cities & stadiums that will host the 2013 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup were announced. This announcement did not include the draw as there is still one spot left to fill in this year’s field, so no announcement was made on hosting dates. Red Bull Arena has been selected as one of the venues, joining Cowboys Stadium, the Rose Bowl, and Soldier Field as the venues from the 2011 tournament to be included this year this.
More importantly, what does today’s announcement mean for World Cup Qualifier stadium picks? If you notice, Dick Sporting Good Park (home of the Colorado Rapids), which is set to host the first WCQ in 2 weeks is not present. This may be because of the bigger Sports Authority Field. Also noticeably absent are: Sporting Park (formerly Livestrong Sporting Park), PPL Park, RFK, and Home Depot Center, all of which had been mentioned as possible hosts for a WCQ match. Now, this is just speculation on my part, but may the exclusion of these sites from the Gold Cup mean that they are in line for a WCQ match? US Soccer obviously hasn’t made an announcement yet, but, at least in my opinion, these missing stadiums are first in line for a WCQ.
RBA hasn’t hosted a lot of international matches in the three years it’s been open, with only having hosted 1 US Friendly vs. Ecuador in Oct 2011. If RBA manages to get the USMNT for a Gold Cup game, and can get a good showing with a majority pro-US crowd, will that help boost the stadium’s profile with US Soccer?
