USA forward Abby Wambach was voted FIFA player of the year today in Zurich, Switzerland at the 2012 FIFA World Awards. Wambach edged out her US teammate Alex Morgan and Brazil’s Marta, who has won the award 5 times. She led her team to gold in the London Olympics this summer with 5 goals in 6 matches. She was named co-captain of the USWNT earlier this year for her leadership both on and off the field. Wambach also moved up to second on the list of most international goals with 152, now only behind Mia Hamm who holds the record with 158 career goals.
Former US head coach Pia Sundhage was also honored today, winning the FIFA manager of the year award. Sundhage is the first US coach to win the prize. She led the USA to 2 Olympic golds and a runner-up world cup finish in her 5 years with the team. She held an outstanding record of 88-6-10 in her time with the US. In October of 2012, she announced she would not renew her contract with the United States and would leave to coach her native Sweden.
