The quasi dark side of RBNY fandom.
Today marked the announcement by MLS of the 2013 Home Openers for all 19 teams. You can click through to see the openers for all the teams, but the two dates that Red Bull fans will care about right now are:
March 3 (Sunday, Week 1): RBNY opens up the season on the road at Portland. This will mark the second straight year where the teams starts away from home. Last year, NY traveled to Dallas where they came up short with a 2-1 Loss.
March 16 (Saturday, Week 3): RBNY opens up RBA for the 2013 season against rival DC United. NY has not lost a home opener since back in the 2003 during the MetroStars days. In the last nine seasons, RBNY have won 6, drawn 3; including winning all 3 openers at RBA since it opened in 2010. They have a goal difference of +11 in those 9 games, with only 3 being 1 goal affairs. Their biggest home wins in this stretch are two 3 goal wins (2012 vs. Colorado, 4-1; and 2007 vs. Columbus, 3-0).
The last time NY faced DC in their home opener (2004), they were the victors pulling out a 3-2 win.
This announcement doesn’t cover the whole MLS schedule, so RBNY may possibly have off between these two games, as they are not helping anyone else open the season. Why wasn’t the whole schedule announced today? Who knows why.
