Add Philadelphia and NE to the Atlantic Cup?

Rich Ransom of Section 133 (Philly Union blog) has a suggestion which I personally find very interesting.  Basically, he says that Philadelphia and New England should join in the Atlantic Cup competition.  His point is that the cup has lost its value over the years, and that adding the two will strengthen the rivalries.  While I can’t speak much to it as I’m fairly new to MLS, I can still see the appeal of making this a multi-team event, ala the Cascadia Cup (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver).   Having all 4 of the teams involved would probably increase the pressure since a trophy would be involved.  Also, like Rich states, wouldn’t it be nice to lord something like this over all 3 teams instead of just DC?

While NY won the Cup last year by a margin of 3 goals (both teams won 1 match), I decided to see what would happen if Philly and NE were involved last year.  Here is how each team did in head-to-head matches.

New York:

  • vs. DC: 1-1-0, 4 GF, 1 GA
    • 4/21: DC 0 – 4 NY
    • 7/9: NY 0 – 1 DC
  • vs. Philadelphia: 1-1-0, 1 GF, 1 GA
    • 4/9: Phil 1 – 0 NY
    • 10/20: NY 1 – 0 Phil
  • vs. New England: 1-0-1, 4 GF, 3 GA
    • 6/10: NY 2 – 1 NE
    • 8/20: NE 2 – 2 NY
  • Total: 10 pts (3-2-1), 9 GF, 5 GA, +4 GD

New England:

  • vs. New York: 0-1-1, 3 GF, 4 GA
    • 6/10: NY 2 – 1 NE
    • 8/20: NE 2 – 2 NY
  • vs. DC: 2-0-0, 3 GF, 1 GA
    • 3/26: NE 2 – 1 DC
    • 7/20: DC 0 – 1 NE
  • vs. Philadelphia: 0-1-1, 4 GF, 7 GA
    • 7/17: NE 0 – 3 Phil
    • 9/7: Phil 4 – 4 NE
  • Total: 8 pts (2-2-2), 10 GF, 12 GA, -2 GD

DC:

  • vs. New York: 1-1-0, 1 GF, 4 GA
    • 4/21: DC 0 – 4 NY
    • 7/9: NY 0 – 1 DC
  • vs. New England: 0-2-0, 1 GF, 2 GA
    • 3/26: NE 2 – 1 DC
    • 7/20: DC 0 – 1 NE
  • vs. Philadelphia: 0-1-1, 4 GF,  5 GA
    • 7/2: DC 2 – 2 Phil
    • 9/29: Phil 3 – DC 2
  • Total: 4 pts (1-4-1), 6 GF, 11 GA, -5 GD

Philadelphia:

  • vs. New York: 1-1-0, 1 GF, 1 GA
    • 4/9: Phil 1 – 0 NY
    • 10/20: NY 1 – 0 Phil
  • vs. New England: 1-0-1, 7 GF, 4 GA
    • 7/17: NE 0 – 3 Phil
    • 9/7: Phil 4 – 4 NE
  • vs. DC: 1-0-1, 5 GF, 2 GA
    • 7/2: DC 2 – 2 Phil
    • 9/29: Phil 3 – DC 2
  • Total: 11 pts (3-1-2), 13 GF, 7 GA, +6 GD

2011 Atlantic Cup Standings (with Philly & NE):

  1. Philadelphia: 11 pts, +6 GD
  2. New York: 10 pts, +4 GD
  3. New England: 8 pts, -2 GD
  4. DC: 4 pts, -5 GD

So, while NY did win in 2011, they wouldn’t have won if all of the US’ Atlantic teams played.  Wouldn’t fans just love to lord this over the fans of DC, Philly, and NE?

I’ll put up the first anti post. The Atlantic cup has always been just something shared between DC and NY. Much like multiple college rivalries have their yearly trophy. Minnesota and Wisconsin have the Paul Bunyon Axe, Boise and Fresno have the Milk Can,Wshington and Wash St have the Apple Cup, etc. I say if DC and NE wanna join the party, then they can create a new trophy that can be given to the winner. Call it the I-95 Construction Cone trophy!

As the author of the article i agree with you. but when both sets of supporters and teams say the trophy competition as lost it s luster, you look for new ways to spark it up again. Example, this rivalry.
