The quasi dark side of RBNY fandom.
One step forward, two steps back.
That seems to be the M.O. for the New York Red Bulls, doesn’t it? Every time you think you think they do something smart off the field, they go right ahead and pull some boneheaded move. Let me just give you two examples of what I’m talking about, and both are happening this weekend.
On Saturday, the team is holding a “Season Kick Off Celebration” at the arena. They’ll have a bunch of activities going on, like watching a Thierry Henry documentary, meeting a player, yada yada. Really, it’s a last minute attempt to bring people in to buy season or partial season tickets. I’m totally fine with that. The more non-game team related events they have the better.
My problem is it’s on the exact same day and time as the South Ward Supporters Tourney going on right down the street. Now I could ramble on here, but Jason Corliss already put it better than I ever could on Empire Of Soccer. So again Red Bull drops the ball right on the fans’ noggins. They talk about wanting to have the best supporters in the league, yet pretty put them off to the side for another ticket selling event.
Now on the second situation that perturbs me. Tonight, and really about 45 minutes ago, the Empire State Building was lit up in red and white colors in honor of the team’s home opener Sunday. Which in of itself is pretty awesome. It’s great to see the most famous building in the world lit up to represent our team. The part that irks me? They’re having Rafa Marquez do the honor of lighting it. Seriously? Of all the people they picked, they choose the guy who’s been SUSPENDED for the past two games for his stupid antics in last year’s playoffs. The guy who berated his teammates saying they were below him. This is the guy the Red Bulls wanted to have the HONOR of lighting up the ESB? Not Thierry Henry, their top star? Not even the supporters favorite player, Joel Lindpere? Hell, not even Juan Agudelo? Nope, they pick Rafa, a player who has done nothing to get back into the good graces of the fans or the media. I just don’t get it. I don’t believe that the front office can be so blind as to pull something like this.
Then again, maybe I should believe it. Because this is about the hundredth time we’ve seen such a dumb move on this organization’s part.
